The National Assembly published a timeline for the election of a speaker on Wednesday, issuing letters to all members of the House.

The election will take place during the National Assembly’s next session on April 16 (Saturday), and nomination papers for the slot can be filed to the Secretary National Assembly until April 15 (Friday) at 2 p.m.

The speaker will be elected in accordance with Rule 9 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly of 2007.

The seat became vacant following the resignation of Asad Qaiser, who announced his decision to the assembly just hours before the Supreme Court’s deadline for a vote of no-confidence motion was set to expire.

“I am bound by the Constitution, and the most crucial obligation of the oath is to safeguard Pakistan’s sovereignty and integrity,” he said. The then-cabinet had shared the claimed “threat letter” with him, according to the former speaker, and implored MPs to stand up for the country’s sovereignty.

“I am unable to continue in the position of Speaker and quit,” Qaiser stated. He also stated that he supports the Supreme Court’s judgement and that the session will be led by former Speaker Ayaz Sadiq.

The parliament shall proceed to elect a speaker under paragraph (1) of Article 53 by secret ballot in accordance with this rule, according to Rule 9 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly of 2007.
