India has long attempted to smear Pakistan’s image abroad, whether through false flag operations or disinformation campaigns. And in the process, it has created a mockery of itself through unjustified, outrageous, and unaccredited activities. Propaganda, disinformation, use of non-state actors, and media campaigns are launched to generate anarchy, chaos, and resentments in Pakistan through various social media channels.
The media campaigns are launched against Pakistan to distort its image at a global level and destabilize it. India is enjoying its leverage over international media to build misperception against Pakistan. Much of this Agenda is propagated through Twitter. A Karachi-based digital media expert said that various hashtags were originated from India including the negative and fake content against Pakistan.
A key example of the coordinated campaign includes the recent T20 World Cup targeting Pakistani cricketer Hasan Ali. Verified Twitter accounts were used to stoke sectarian discord at a time when Muslims were being targeted in India. Accounts owned by Ravi Ranjan, OpIndia.com, and Anand Ranganathan, propelled negative content aimed at fueling sectarian unrest inside Pakistan. Earlier, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Fawad Chaudhry also mentioned that more than 300,000 tweets originated from the Indian city of Ahmedabad within three-and-a-half minutes during the protests that happened in April 2021.
The Eu Disinfo Lab, a Brussels-based independent NGO mentioned the Maximisation of negative content about Pakistan online, primarily using a network of fake local media across the world. The massive operation targeting international institutions and serving Indian interests was steered by a New Delhi-based entity.
Dr. Imran, a senior digital media expert said more than 500 domains were traced to an Indian IP address used to propel hate speech and fake news.
According to a recent study published in Sage’s International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions journal titled “Prevalence and Source Analysis of Covid-19 Disinformation in 138 Countries,” India is the leading source of misinformation about the pandemic as well.
The adversaries are targeting Pakistan with hybrid warfare. They are attempting to split Pakistani society between ethnicity and sectarianism. Pakistan is currently on the FATF’s grey list, which is the result of India’s negative propaganda efforts and false flag operations. In truth, Pakistan played a critical part in the war on terror and made several sacrifices, but it was never properly recognized for its contributions, and is still being pressured to “do more.” Although, Pakistan possesses all of the necessary power and capability to meet the challenges of hybrid warfare. We hope that Pakistan develops more effective counter-strategies to address these issues.
