Pakistan welcomed the steps taken by the UN Security Council and the US to ease aid flow to Afghanistan. The development was credited to the recently held Extraordinary Session of The OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM), which took place in Islamabad recently.
The Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that Two important developments have taken place in support of the Afghan people following the OIC session. The first one is the UNSC resolution to provide aid to Afghanistan and the second is about US exemptions on doing permitted business previously subjected to US sanctions.
A statement was issued by the Foreign Office of Pakistan, which expressed the hope that the world would urgently fulfil the needs of struggling Afghans. It mentioned that the resolution has reaffirmed that the provision of humanitarian and other assistance to the people of Afghanistan is not a violation of the Security Council’s Sanctions regime. It also quoted that resolution was a step in the right direction for helping the Afghans faced with a dire situation.
In his keynote speech to the OIC CFM, Prime Minister Imran Khan stressed that sanctions should not prohibit the international community from delivering humanitarian and other critical assistance to the Afghan people.
Pakistan wishes that the International Community, particularly donor countries, UN agencies, humanitarian organisations, international financial institutions, and other emergency relief providers, will act quickly and decisively to aid the Afghan people.
This resolution came at a critical time and reflected the sense of urgency felt by the International Community to assist the Afghan people, who have suffered immensely as a result of decades of conflict.
