The Ever Given containership was refloated and the Suez Canal reopened to traffic causing relief almost a week after the huge container ship got stuck and blocked a major route for global trade through the water.
The chief of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), Admiral Osama Rabie, had around 3pm local time (1300 GMT) “announced the resumption of shipping traffic in the Suez Canal”, the authority said.
The SCA warned that it will take more than 4 days to clear the traffic jam of 425 vessels stuck at both ends of the canal.
Maritime data company Lloyd’s List said the blockage had held up an estimated $9.6 billion worth of cargo each day between Asia and Europe.
The freed vessel was traveling north toward the Great Bitter Lake, through which the canal passes, “for an inspection of its seaworthiness,” said the Taiwan company Evergreen which operates the ship.
